Bringing Your Labrador Home

Preparing for the "Gotcha Day" and Beyond

The first few days with your Willow Creeks puppy are the foundation of a lifetime of friendship. While exciting, this transition requires preparation to ensure your new companion feels safe, secure, and welcome in their new environment.

Pre-Arrival Essentials

The Nursery Setup

  • Sturdy wire crate with a divider
  • Washable, plush bedding
  • Non-tip food and water bowls
  • The Willow Creeks scent blanket

Safety First

  • Puppy-proofed electrical cords
  • Toxic plants removed from reach
  • Secure fencing or exercise pen
  • Adjustable nylon collar and leash

Health & Nutrition

  • High-quality large breed puppy food
  • Scheduled first vet wellness exam
  • Safe chew toys (Kongs/Nylabones)
  • Stainless steel grooming comb

The Journey Home

Pick-up day is a big event. We recommend bringing a second person to hold the puppy or sit near the crate during the drive. Bring plenty of paper towels and a gentle cleaner just in case of motion sickness.

The First 24 Hours

Keep things low-key. Your puppy has just left their mother and siblings for the first time. Avoid hosting a "puppy party" with friends and neighbors immediately. Let them explore their immediate area and meet household members one by one.

The First Night

Place the crate in your bedroom if possible. Hearing your breathing will help the puppy feel less isolated. Expect a little whining; this is normal. Use the scent blanket we provided to provide a familiar smell of the litter.

The "Rule of Three" for Labradors

3 Days: They may be overwhelmed and not eat much. This is the decompression phase.

3 Weeks: They start to feel comfortable and their true personality (and Labrador energy!) begins to emerge.

3 Months: They have built a complete bond with you and understand the household routine.
